Newton dental care Watertown Belmont Cambridge MA dental care Dental Care How To Make Your Child Comfortable In The Dentist s OfficeKeeping your teeth and gums healthy begins at home but is incomplete without regular professional care. You should visit your dentist at least once every six months. Did you know that brushing or flossing your teeth too vigorously can cause damage? Your dentist can show you the proper way to brush and floss your teeth, as well as give you advice on which toothbrushes, toothpastes or mouth rinses are best for your teeth and gums.
Remember, healthy gums do not bleed! If you have swollen, bleeding gums you may have periodontal disease. The sooner you see a dentist to eliminate the problem, the better.
Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is necessary for good home dental care. Plaque begins accumulating 20 minutes after you eat, and when it is not brushed away, this sticky mix of food and bacteria will harden into tartar. Plaque and tartar can cause many problems including cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, halitosis, abscesses and health problems outside the mouth.
According to the Mayo Clinic, infections of the gums and teeth can contribute to cardiovascular disease, premature birth and low birth weight, problems regulating blood sugar of diabetics and the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Infection that begins in the mouth can spread bacteria or other germs through the body. When these attach to damaged areas of the lining of the heart, the resulting infection is called endocarditis.
Routine professional cleanings and exams will help keep your mouth—and your body—healthy. We welcome any new patients to come and experience our thorough and gentle dentist and to ask any dental care questions or concerns that you may have.
Dental crowns have come a long way since they were first used to “cap” damaged or malformed natural teeth to restore, strengthen and improve appearance. Thanks to new technology, today’s dental crowns are much improved. Dental porcelain can not only be shaped like natural teeth, it can also replicate the look of tooth enamel. New porcelain crowns reflect light in the same way as natural teeth, making them look even more natural. Dental crowns used by Watertown Dentistry are the highest quality and will therefore give you the best results.
Dental crowns can be used for cosmetic dentistry procedures or to protect weak teeth from further damage. Dental crowns are necessary to support dental bridges and are used to cover dental implants. They are also used to seal teeth after a root canal treatment. Our highest quality dental crowns ensure that your root canal will never need re-treatment and your teeth will remain strong.
Crowns installed for any reason will improve the look of your smile. When a tooth is weakened by decay, or there is not a lot of tooth left after a large filling, a porcelain crown can support the natural tooth and protect it from breaking. A dental crown can also hold together the parts of a cracked tooth. A chipped, broken or severely worn-down tooth can be restored with a crown. Dental crowns can be used to cover misshaped or severely discolored teeth, and to make cosmetic modifications.
A dental crown replaces the external portion of teeth down to the gum level, so is an excellent choice to reclaim the form and function of a damaged tooth and for improving the look of a flawed smile. Porcelain crowns look like natural teeth, while providing strength and resilience. In other words, porcelain crowns keep your smile healthy and strong.
Dr. Ray Hanna, DMD of Watertown Dentistry, is a Invisalign® dentist and Invisalign® certified and can improve your smile with their state-of-the-art, comfortable, and convenient plastic aligners. Whether you are embarrassed by crooked teeth or widely-spaced teeth, or have a misalignment – overbite, underbite, open bite or cross bite – it is likely you are candidate for Invisalign® Invisible Braces.
Invisalign® dentist Watertown Belmont Newton Cambridge MA Invisalign® dentist Invisalign® dentist Invisalign dentist Watertown Belmont Newton Cambridge MAInvisalign® treatment to give you a better smile involves a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners that gently and gradually shift your teeth into correct position. Because they are removable, there is no need to give up any type of food you enjoy. You can also keep with your normal, simple dental care routine of flossing every day and brushing twice a day.
Because their aligners are made of smooth plastic, they will not damage or irritate gum or cheek tissue in the way metal braces often do. Because the plastic aligners are also clear, they are virtually invisible. People will not notice the aligners like they would notice braces, but they will notice how your smile improves with each stage of treatment.
Each stage of treatment lasts approximately two weeks and consists of a new aligner. For best results, aligners are worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. Necessary Invisalign® dentist office visits are less frequent than with traditional braces, usually only every four to six weeks to monitor progress. The time to complete Invisalign® treatment for teens is comparable to that of braces, while adult treatment is typically completed in about a year.
If you are concerned that the comfort, convenience and aesthetics of Invisalign® mean it costs more than having your teeth straightened with braces, do not worry. The cost is about the same as braces.
Do you live or work in the towns of Newton, Watertown, Belmont or Cambridge? Would you like to know if you are a candidate for Invisalign®? Would you like to find out the length and cost of your specialized treatment plan, call Watertown Dentistry for your free Invisalign® dentist consultation today, and get started on achieving your perfect smile.
Many people have had dentists put silver-colored fillings in their teeth because they had cavities. These fillings are amalgam fillings, made of a mixture of mercury, silver, tin and copper; mercury is necessary to bind the other metals together. Amalgam is used to fill the space where the decay in the tooth was removed. Over time the amalgam corrodes and leaks. This blackens the silver, and often the tooth. This darkening is easily seen when the person opens his or her mouth, and causes many people embarrassment.
At Watertown Dentistry we can replace your amalgam fillings with composite fillings. Composite fillings are made of a porcelain-like material that is color-matched to the natural tooth. They are unnoticeable because they look like the tooth they fill. The bond formed between tooth and composite also provides support for the remaining tooth structure. Composite fillings look natural, and are both strong and stain-resistant.
Whether you are having an old amalgam filling replaced or a cavity filled for the first time with a composite filling, the same process is used to fill your cavity. Composite fillings are applied in layers after the tooth is properly prepared. The layers are hardened by a special light. Following application, your dentist will shape the composite to fit the tooth, then polish it. It is important that the filling is properly shaped. This requires your feedback as your bite is tested to get just the right shape. When your filling is properly shaped, your bite will remain the same and your tooth will function as it did originally. A layer of plastic can keep the color of the composite from changing when exposed to staining foods and drinks.
Composites can also be used for cosmetic purposes to improve your smile by changing the color of teeth or changing the shape of disfigured teeth.
A periodontal dentist will check for and discover if you have some degree of periodontal disease. Unhealthy gums are a red flag, warning of future tooth loss and the potential for stroke and heart disease. Most people think they have healthy teeth and practice good dental hygiene, but most American adults show signs of serious gum disease. Gum disease, not tooth decay, is the reason most people lose their teeth. The best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy and attractive is regular preventive care, including visits to your dentist at least every six months.
Symptoms of periodontal disease include the following:
Red or swollen gums
Tender or bleeding gums
Receding gums
Painful chewing
Sensitive teeth
Loose teeth
Bad breath that will not go away
Although these symptoms can alert you to a problem, periodontal disease can go on for years without pain and be undetectable without the right examination. Gum disease can also lead to a combination of health issues.
That is why seeing a periodontal dentist, like Dr Ray Hanna, is so important for your oral health. A visual oral examination by itself, even by a dentist, will not reliably detect periodontal disease until it has reached an advanced stage. Early detection and adequate diagnosis require a comprehensive periodontal exam. This includes measurement of pockets formed as gums detach from teeth. Effective prevention begins at home with proper dental care and is continued by your dentist.
At Watertown Dentistry, we will ask about your medical history to assess risk factors and identify underlying conditions that could contribute to gum disease. Our periodontal dentist will also examine your gums for any signs of inflammation before using a probe, which is like a tiny ruler, to check and measure any pockets around your teeth. In a healthy mouth pockets are typically between one and three millimeters. The test for pocket depth is usually painless.
Treatment depends on the severity of the infection. The mildest form of gum disease is gingivitis; it is reversible. Untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. When plaque spreads below the gum line it causes many problems. Damage caused as the disease progresses is irreversible. Early detection and intervention is important.
Dental implants are an artificial tooth root. It is implanted in the jaw to hold a replacement tooth or a dental bridge. New technology and the use of titanium allow modern implants to not only provide a firm foundation for more attractive visible dental work, but also preserve the integrity of natural bone. This helps prevent further damage that would require intervention. Implants can repair your smile and preserve it for years to come.
Advances in implant dentistry over the last decade have made placing dental implants simpler for dentists. Dental implant surgery no longer requires an operating room and can be done in the relative comfort of your dentist’s office with local anesthesia. Because of these advances, implant dentistry is shifting from being a dental specialty to a mainstream procedure. Most dentists who perform dental implant procedures now use a single, simple unit. Current procedures – the use of titanium, and advances in surface technology – allow for improved osseointegration, a big word that means your natural bone will form structural and functional bonds with your implant. The result is reliable dental implants that acts just as your natural tooth root did, with the same type of bond with your jawbone. A properly installed dental implant will preserve the bone of your jaw instead of damaging it.
While receiving dental implants is a much easier procedure than in the past, and is safe for most people, there are reasons some people should not be considered for implant surgery. If you have a bleeding disorder or uncontrolled diabetes, if you are receiving radiation treatment or intravenous bisphosphonates, you should avoid implant surgery. Be sure to tell your dentist about any health conditions you have, medical treatments you are undergoing, or medications you are taking.
Be honest about any concerns you have about any procedure you are considering or undergoing at Watertown Dentistry. We will always take the time to answer your questions and explain all procedures before and throughout your visits.
With advances in dentistry, fewer people need to wear full dentures. If you have older ones or think you may need dentures, now is a good time to take advantage of what modern denture technology has to offer. Watertown Dentistry can replace worn-out dentures with custom-made, state-of-the-art ones that blend not only with your skin color but also with your hair and eye color, giving your “false teeth” the most natural look possible.
Older dentures do not look as natural as the modern ones our dental team can offer you today. Also, they can wear out over time, making the wearer look older than they are. One reason is that as dentures wear out they may not support your facial muscles as they once did. Worn-out dentures are also likely to cause pain while chewing.
There are two types. Partial dentures, like bridges, replace one tooth or several, and are held in place by metal clasps that fit onto remaining natural teeth. Complete dentures, also called full dentures or false teeth, are used when all natural teeth are missing. Though have long been held in place by suction, they can now be held in by dental implants. The dental implants work similarly to how the natural root worked. They provide stability and support for the denture attached to them, while maintaining gum and bone structure. Though more invasive at the start, implant-supported dentures act more like real teeth, making eating and talking more comfortable. They also protect your mouth from unnecessary bone deterioration and the accumulation of germs and plaque that can lead to infection and periodontal disease.
To keep your smile attractive and healthy, partial and complete dentures need to be cleaned every day, just like natural teeth.
If you have suffered tooth loss, you may wonder what the best choice is for you. Implants, a bridge, or dentures? Our dentist can help you decide which option will work best for your unique needs.
If you have uneven, broken or stained teeth, cosmetic dentistry can help rectify these conditions. Some examples of cosmetic dentistry include:

Teeth discoloration can occur as a result of cigarettes, tea, coffee or medication. It could also be hereditary or it can occur when someone gets older. Bleaching or teeth whitening is a popular chemical process which can help rectify this problem. You can also bleach your teeth to make them a shade whiter.
You can choose to bleach your teeth at the dentist’s office or you can do it at home. Most people prefer to do it at home because it is more convenient. Your dentist will create a mouthpiece for you that has the correct amount of whitening solution. Whitening from home can take about two to four weeks while at the dentist’s office it can take one or more, 45 minutes to one hour visits.
Crowns
Crowns cover the tooth to restore its normal shape and appearance. They are very costly and are used when other types of cosmetic dentistry are not as effective. Even though they are a time-consuming procedure, crowns have the longest life expectancy of all cosmetic restorations.
Veneers
These are thin pieces of plastic or porcelain placed over the front teeth to change the shape or color of your teeth. They are suitable for teeth that are crooked, unevenly spaced, oddly shaped, discolored or chipped.
Bonding
Bonding is used to change the color or fill in gaps in between your teeth. You only need to go for one office visit and it will last you for years. Unfortunately, out of all the other types of restoration, bonding is more vulnerable to chipping or staining. Bonding would also be suitable for you if you have small cavities or when your teeth are slightly decayed. You can also use it to change the shape and color of your teeth.
How Do You Determine The Right Cosmetic Dentistry Procedure For You?
This will depend on the condition of your teeth and what you want the outcome to be. If you are thinking about correcting your smile using cosmetic dentistry, there are a few questions you can ask your dentist such as:
What type of maintenance will I require after the procedure?
What should I expect throughout the treatment?
What will my teeth look like at the end of the procedure?
At Watertown Dentistry, we will help you to decide which cosmetic dental procedure is best for you. Call to set up an appointment today at (617) 539-8724.
If you are missing one or more teeth between other teeth, a ceramic dental bridge is an excellent alternative to removable partial dentures or dental implants. By attaching natural-looking artificial teeth between two dental crowns on the adjacent teeth, we can give your smile a wonderful improvement that is both functional and aesthetic.
Unlike dentures, bridges are not prone to slippage. They stay in place like implants but are less invasive. A bridge is a permanent prosthesis, attached to existing teeth. A partial denture is an artificial replacement of teeth and gums that is held in place by metal clasps that fit onto remaining natural teeth.
Dental implants require a series of procedures to recreate a missing tooth or teeth. A titanium implant is put in the empty tooth pocket, called the alveolus, where the natural tooth’s root was. Over time, titanium forms a bond with surrounding bone similar to the bond a tooth has with the bone of the jaw. The exposed part of the implant is covered with a crown. A dental bridge requires no implantation in the jaw.
Gaps left by missing teeth are not merely a cosmetic issue. Remaining teeth will rotate or shift into the gap, resulting in problems with the overall alignment of the teeth, called the bite. The imbalance can lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Gaps left by missing teeth can also contribute to the development of gum disease. Getting a dental bridge can not only give you the confidence of regaining your beautiful smile, it can also protect your mouth and body from infection and unnecessary pain.
A dental bridge can last a lifetime but, like your natural teeth, requires good oral hygiene.
At Watertown Dentistry we will develop a treatment plan that best fits all your dental needs. Remember, we will always take the time to answer your questions and explain all procedures before and throughout your visits.
Infections can develop not only in your gums but also in your teeth. An endodontist practices endodontics, commonly called root canal therapy, which is the treatment of an infection inside a tooth. The biggest problem with tooth infections is that once bacteria is present in the tooth and the nerve tissue has started to degenerate, there is no way for the body’s natural germ-fighting defenses to effectively reach and fight the infection. The space left by nerve tissue as it degenerates provides a cave-like area for bacteria to persist. Bacteria left untreated in your tooth can cause an abscess. An abscess is swollen area where pus has accumulated and can be very painful.
Newton Watertown endodontist Cambridge Brighton MA endodontist Newton Waterown Endodontist Cambridge MA IMG 4510An endodontist can save your tooth. During a root canal the infected pulp of the tooth is removed. The inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected. The tooth is then filled with a rubber-like material that also seals the tooth. The tooth is then restored with a crown or filling. The tooth can then function the way it always did.
Millions of teeth have been saved through endodontic treatment. Despite popular opinion, root canals can be at least relatively comfortable during the process and during recovery. A modern endodontist allows the process to be more like getting a routine filling. Depending on the state of the tooth, most treatments can be completed in one or two visits to your endodontist.
Not only can an endodontist save your tooth to preserve your smile, it can allow you to continue eating the foods you love. It can also help you avoid additional dental intervention on other teeth by protecting them from unnecessary strain or wear. If an abscess has caused pain, endodontics will relieve the pain of the infection and swelling, and allow you to again chew normally. Most treated teeth will last as long as your other natural teeth.
